How Often Should Gutters Be Cleaned?

There isn't a single answer to how often gutters should be cleaned. It depends on the property, the surrounding trees and how much debris reaches the roof.

For some homes, an annual clean may be sufficient. Others may benefit from more frequent attention.

Why do gutters become blocked?

Leaves are one of the most obvious causes, but gutters can also collect:

  • Moss
  • Small twigs
  • Seeds
  • Roof debris
  • General organic material

Properties underneath or close to trees can accumulate considerably more debris than properties in open areas.

What happens when gutters become blocked?

Gutters are designed to collect rainwater and direct it safely away from the building.

When they become blocked, water may overflow rather than travelling through the intended drainage system.

This can result in water running down external walls or over areas where it wasn't intended to go.

A blocked gutter doesn't automatically mean a property will develop damp problems, but leaving drainage systems obstructed isn't a good idea.

How do you know if they need cleaning?

Some signs are fairly obvious:

  • Water overflowing during rainfall
  • Plants growing from the gutter
  • Visible moss or debris
  • Staining below the gutter
  • Gutters that appear to sag under the weight of debris

Sometimes, however, a gutter can be significantly blocked without being obvious from ground level.

How often should they be checked?

For many properties, checking gutters at least once a year is sensible.

Homes surrounded by mature trees may need more frequent attention, particularly after autumn leaf fall.

The important thing is to consider the property rather than relying on a fixed schedule.

Is gutter cleaning a DIY job?

Accessible gutters can sometimes be cleaned safely by a homeowner.

However, working at height introduces additional risks, particularly where ladders are involved or gutters are difficult to reach.

Professional gutter cleaning equipment can allow many properties to be cleaned from ground level, reducing the need to work directly from ladders.
